Leadership Project

Substantive Issue

Men in high-pressure social environments, such as fraternities, often face a "silent struggle" with mental health. Social stigma and a lack of tailored resources prevent members from seeking help. While students often turn to peers first, these peers frequently lack the specific knowledge to direct friends to professional care. This creates a gap between the close-knit culture of Greek life and the clinical support systems available on campus. The problem is a lack of structured, empathetic translation between professional mental health tools and the daily social realities of college men.

General Recommendations

Establish a Health and Wellness Chair to serve as a knowledgeable liaison and advocate within the chapter. This role should focus on promoting a community of care rather than providing clinical therapy.

Detailed Plan

Implementation

The Health and Wellness Chair will lead a committee dedicated to developing interactive presentations and mental health awareness resources. Implementation involves scheduling bi-weekly "de-stress meetings" held at brothers' houses or outdoor locations like the Congaree Riverwalk to encourage decompression. The committee will use the JED Foundation's Greek-specific framework to strengthen emotional well-being. These meetings will start with sharing weekly highs and lows to lower barriers for communication. The chair will maintain an updated directory of campus clinical resources to ensure immediate, accurate referrals when members are in distress.

Evaluation

Effectiveness will be assessed by tracking attendance at the meetings and participation in outdoor brotherhood events. The chair will monitor the frequency of resource referrals to determine if brothers are successfully connecting with campus services. Success is defined by a measurable increase in brotherhood connectedness and the normalization of mental health discussions within chapter operations. Annual surveys will verify if members feel they have a reliable outlet for stress and a clear path to professional help.
